New record of coral reef-associated xanthoid crab from Indian waters

Collection: Southeastern Bay of Bengal, south of Great Nicobar Island, Nicobars, 6.65°N, 93.83°E, 56 m, 16.08.2019 (FORVSS 388, St. 18), Chain dredge.

Description: Carapace hexagonal, regions defined by reticulate pattern of fused granules; frontal margin indistinctly bilobed, lobes separated by shallow U-shaped notch; anterolateral margin strongly arcuate, irregularly serrated, forming angular junction with concave posterolateral margin. Basal antennal article large, subrectangular, distinctly granular. Mxp3 merus subquadrate, with 2 depressions separated by an oblique granular ridge, antero-external angle rounded. Chelipeds bearing reticulate pattern of fused granules; palm with granular margins; fingers slightly shorter than palm, bearing rows of granular ridges continuing from granular rows on palm. P2–5 meri with granular margins, dorsal surface of P5 & carpi of all pereopods with reticulate pattern; propodi rugose, margins serrated; dactyli slightly curved. Male pleon & telson with reticulate pattern of fused granules; somites 3–5 fused, somite 6 longest; telson rounded. G1 slender, gently sinuous, tapering distally; terminal aperture with 2 lamellar folds; several long, thick simple setae located subdistally.

Biological association: None.

Remarks: New record of the genus Visayax Mendoza & Ng, 2008 from Indian waters.

Distribution: Bohol Sea and Andaman Sea (India). Depth range: 3–54 m.
